A new art space is taking shape in SOPHIE 7 - the former Sophienspital in Vienna’s 7th district. MEZEKƎRƎ deliberately anchors its artistic and curatorial reference points in the Global Majority and its diaspora, creating a translocal space with international connections, charting new paths conceptually, thematically, aesthetically, and in terms of socio-political engagement. The space will launch in October 2026.

19:00 — Naya takes the stage
Brazilian-born, Berlin-based performance artist and comedian Naya de Souza, aka the @bundaskanzlerin, brings 45 minutes of sharp, political, gloriously unruly stand-up. Multilingual by birth and transdisciplinary by practice, she treats every border between countries, disciplines, and institutions, as something made to be crossed.

Stay for the conversations and the company. Browse the crowdfunding merch and artworks gathered for this evening and take a piece home if you wish. Every purchase helps sustain and build the space; room by room, gathering by gathering.

MEZEKƎRƎ is a polyphonic art and culture space for global and diasporic artistic practice located in Vienna. The annual program includes exhibitions, performances, concerts, readings, workshops, community events. It is a place of radical hospitality, encounter, and shared learning. A place that connects local artists with international contexts. Help us to make it run, despite all the financial difficulties and the challenging times we are living in.s, Real Impact.

Your contribution helps us equip the space with what’s needed to open: paying rent and securing the space, furniture, technical equipment for sound and video, production materials, secure funds to invite artists from all continents and to build the infrastructure required to host artists. This is how we keep the space thriving, open, and rooted in care.

OPENING

MEZEKƎRƎ

October 2nd

OPENING ⎯ MEZEKƎRƎ ⎯ October 2nd ⎯

Between April and May, MEZEKƎRƎ hosted an artistic residency by visual artist Gê Viana, accompanied by Kaká Farias, Assistant Artistic Production.
Throughout this period, they developed a process of research and creation shaped by memory, archives, ancestry, and experimentation, culminating in a new stage of the artistic journey presented in the exhibition.

We are now pleased to announce the exhibition opening on October 2, alongside the official inauguration of MEZEKƎRƎ, rescheduled from the previously announced date of the 26th.

Artist Residency:
Gê Viana at MEZEKƎRƎ
April and May belong to Gê Viana

The Brazilian artist from Maranhão joins MEZEKƎRƎ for a residency rooted in research and creation; a slow, intentional unfolding toward a solo exhibition at the space.
This is what we do here. We build room for artists and curators from the Global Majority with sacred intention. We make space for practices that challenge what has been centered for too long, and that affirm the fullness of other cosmologies, other memories, other ways of making meaning and knowing.
On October 2nd, Gê Viana's exhibition will open, and with it, so will MEZEKƎRƎ, officially, to the world.
Mark the date. More soon.

Gê Viana’s work emerges from the streets and collective spaces, bringing together historical archives, memories, and experiences to create insurgent visual narratives. Through collage, photomontage, and interventions, Gê activates “time branches” connecting ancestry and the present. Shaped by Afropindoramic identity and Maranhão’s culture, Gê’s practice reimagines colonial records and proposes new ways of seeing and existing.
